Getting on the Right Track

So the last class i thought i was really good. It was another update of where everyone should be and where the class is heading. I like it that kind of class because it reminded of a game meeting before a big, match or race. Your coach telling you his/her plans for the game and what he/she hopes to get out of everyone in sports event. That I 100% how I felt in that class. I love how Prof. Zucman told us whats up next for the section. I can't wait to go to the museum. I love the museum trips since i love going to them and discovering new artists and types of art. I like expending my knowledge and my world with it. Also i love having an honest to god reason to go to all the museums. I hope one section we get to go the Getty museum.

What I like to do...

Sorry haven't posted anything all weekend. My weekend was pretty full, so Ill write a nice long one with pictures and videos of what I like/love to do.

If you all recall that in the first day of class, I asked if posting my sewing/craft projects count for the class. I love to sew. I love buying  fabric and see it transform in to a dress, shirt, skirt, shorts, or whatever. I feel so accomplished when I finish something. i learned how to sew from my mother and she inspired me to do it too. Also Disney's Cinderella helped to. This is my favorite scene:

I have made many things over the years and of course my mother helped until i was ready to do most of it on my own. I kept sewing a secret in High School because I was already called geeky jock. After high school I got a job at Knott's Berry Farm in their wardrobe department. It was the best thing that happen to me. A job right out of high school, and something Im interested in.

Here are some photos of my station at Knotts and the curtains i made this past friday. Apparently none of the other ladies want to make curtains for the park so now its my job. I didn't mind since i got to practice my straight lines along with being able to bust out 6 curtains in about 6 hours. I was pretty proud of myself.
sorry some aren't 100% clear but still easy to make out what it is.

I also really like to bake. I love making cupcakes. When I full day, I'll them from scratch. When I don't i make them from a box but I add to them, spices, flavoring. Well today my boyfriend bought me some oranges, okay not some but  tons, like two shopping bags worth. Again another disney movie inspired me to bake. This time it was Snow White.

So with all the oranges I found a recipe for Orange Cream Pie, I had never made crust before so it was fun and an adventure at the same time. I learned a lot because I have never had a pie and found out that it is an art form of its own from cupcakes. here are some photos. by the way citrus in a cut stings like no other!

And that was my weekend besides studying. I also went to a club for a friends birthday. I would post pictures but i don't have have permission of my friend's friends. It was fun, lots of dancing and lots of sleeping the next day. See you all in class!!

Science and Art

Mr. Zucman said today that he believes that art and science intertwine. I totally agree. I found this article in my boyfriends science magazines:

I found this really interesting because the guy most sleep standing up! That's nuts! I love my bed, i die when i travel because I'm going to have my best sleep. Also its interesting because the guy drew a flipping hole in his head so it will take pictures for 500+ days! I love it because you can check out his pictures on his website. This is complete and utterly dedication to his research. Its Art because many people who take photographs see the art in their subject. Its also art since its seeing from the back of his. I highly suggest that you go and check out the website.!! www.3rdi.me I would post some pictures but i am not allowed. :( seriously go check it out! Its awesome!!!

Norton Simon

Oh how I love the Norton Simon Museum. I've been there now a full 2 times and it doesn't get old. The first time I went I was In high school and went with my french class, we were only allowed to look at the french art and comment on it french. It was fun but annoying because I wasn't allowed to see the whole museum until. I knew Norton Simon had a huge selection and a diverse one at that but boy was I blown away from the diversity. So since I had most of the french art and remembered it I kinda just flew by them. I will not look at this painting ever again in my life:
I have talked about his painting in French for days for my High School class and the trip to the Norton Simon, If I could I would have given the painting the middle finger i would have but I didn't want to get in trouble, I just walked by in disgust.

Compare and Contrast.
The two paintings that I chose were from completely different , time, and even society. The first painting that I decided to choose was Fidelity by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, this was painted around 1480s.
I liked this painting because all of the lines are straight around the main subject, even the designed around the subject are straight or pretty darn close to it. I like how the color is still very vibrant after all these years. Through all the years the boarder that is painted could have been red but have faded to a fuschia which now compliment the subject's light pink dress. The description said about this painting "..implies that the trust and loyalty shared between master and sercant also exists between God and the devout." I have feeling that many viewers of the painting don't see the religous story behind this, rather just see a young girl with her dog, which would trigger many memories for those who grew up with dogs. The story for this painting on surface is just about a young girl and her dog, there is no story that one can find off the surface than that, I don't think. Some may be able to just day dream in it about all kinds of things but for me it was just a girl in a pink dress with her dog, pointing to heaven.  Another thing that I truly love about this painting is her dress; its very free flowing. It doesn't follow the other straight lines of the piece. It makes one's eye focus on her posture showing that she doesn't follow the norm, she isn't standing straight up but slightly angled the like the birth of Venus.

The second painting I chose
is the Piazzetta Scene from the Riva Degli Schiavoni (1835-1843 ) by Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. I chose this one because it shows the beauty of Venice from over 150 years. It shows that it was just as beautiful as it is today as back then.
I like this painting because I can get lost in it and day dream for hours and hours. This painting marvelous because it tells many stories from all the people in it. The people next to the columns are just walking and to the left of that you group trying to figure out what to do. Then there is the woman walking straight and she looks like a nun. See many stories one can follow. I really how Corot took a different approach to painting Venice, usually most artist painted from where the pillar are and viewer sees the side of the building that to the right is usually in the background of all the other paintings. I love the colors of this piece, the reds, blues, soft pinks, tans, whites, and browns. They all tie in together really well, also there isn't too much of one single color, many same color scheme but different shades. I love this painting because it depicts an ordinary day on the port of Venice, everyone is doing their own thing to their own horn. No scene was created to make it look fake or scripted. Everyone is just on their own waiting to see what life brings to them.

The pictures are the same in that they are both have beautiful lines in them. The lines for both paintings outline the subject or subjects.  With
Fidelity the lines are the boarder while in the Piazzetta its the side of the building to the right, the top of the background building and to the left is the sky and parts of the boats. The colors in both paintings are very warm and welcoming. If the pieces were cold, then the meaning of paintings would be completely different. Cold colors for Fidelity would have made the painting seem something close to death since of the time period, most paintings that were cold colored had to with the lost of the something or some one. Where as the Piazzetta, if it were cold colors it would be a storm is brewing.
The paintings are different in that they have different subjects. The Piazzetta painting has many subjects in it with all the different people doing different motions and directions they are going. Where as in
Fidelity the subject could possible smack you right in the face, she is right up in front and the way she presented one's eye goes straight to her. When one's eye is looking at the Piazzetta, it could look at the person in the right corner near the boats to what that person is doing, or the eye could go to the boats, or it could and look at the deal of the clouds and how they are puffy near the land and as they move out over the sea they flatten out.  I find both paintings very beautiful and the colors really caught my eye. I like both of them because I can myself for hours just day dreaming in both them, letting them take me away on their journey.

Degas Ballerinas
Now I understand that I was suppose to take a picture with the paintings but I kinda got really close to one of the other paintings and according to my boyfriend I got in trouble. So I didn't even try to take a picture with my paintings for the compare and contrast pieces.

So For Degas I bulit up courage to take a picture because I didn't want to get yelled at again. Now i didn't take my picture with the ever famous Degas Dancer (The one wearing a tutu). I really liked this one because no one was paying attention to it in the museum. Also it shows ballet moves. (I use to do ballet so i liked it doing the end of a grand arabesque). I loved that it had little detail in face and paid attention to the movement of the body, the pointing of the feet, how a ballerina's hips aren't the same another dancer, ballerina's hips are turned out. I also liked that finger prints were visible, he used his hands, not many tools.

(I know my legs are super white, I work in theatre, I never see the sun anymore. :[ )

Well that was my adventure at the Norton Simon.

Sorry its so late, I had major writer's block.

Venice Beach

Finally made my way to Venice Beach! I had a blast once i found the place to paint. It was a minor adventure. Im old fashion and went with my parents. It was fun because my parents have never been there either. All new experience all around. Well I got to the "permit office" and it said it was closed on sudays. I freaked out a little but then my dad found a cop and explained everything and the cop goes oh well there should be a guy there watching the walls. So we found the guy and i got my permit. He showed me  where i could paint so I did my little tag.  The guy was surprised that it didn't take me long, i had everything planned out!.

IHS is a catholic thing, its what I tagged on the wall. there is a well-known story of constantine's vision of the corss. in the year 312 this non-Christian leader was marching on Rome to engage Maxentius. At the Mulvian bridge over the Tiber, he met the foe who stood between him and Rome. he reported that the night before, in a dream Constantine had seen a luminous cross and heard the words in hoc signo vinces (in this sign you will conquer). he inscribed the cross and motto on his soldiers shields. on Oct. 28, 312, there occurred one of the decisive military engagements of history, in which Maxentius lost the battle and his life. The West was Constantine's. (The Catholic Source book)

here are more pictures that i took.
I wish i had that talent for letters and spray paint. ^

now these pictures i saw at the restaurant that i ate at, and i really liked because it celebs through out the years. From Charlie Chaplin to Liza Minelli to Pam Andersen.

well thats my adventure in Venice Beach...oh yeah the muscle builders grossed me out with just walking around in speedos. ewwww. :)

3.2 art history in a flash!

Today in class we went over the history of art in a flash. we went from 3 million years ago today.
we saw a pebble from the australopithecus people (3 m.y.a.). It reminded me of Wilson from the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away.

the pebbe isn't carved by the australopithecus people, its actually worn in from water which happens to look like a face. Mr. Zucman finds it cool that some Australopithecus found it and decided it was neat so he/she brought it to his/her cave. As Mr. Zucman said, this person was the first curator by bringing it in to keep safe and more than likely on display.

The paintings of the Australopitecus Africans that were shown in class, were pretty similar to us human, they reminded me of the other movie Planet of the Apes, both versions.

The painting of the Pioneer space craft was interesting, it was of the atom bomb, our solar system, a male and female human and some numbers that i couldn't make out from the back of the classroom.

We also talked  the Chartes cathedral and how it is like an encyclopedia of art because it kept burning and being rebuilt so many times that it has 3 different centuries in it. the 11th-13th.

Is the Goth period and Gothic the same? this question came up since the cathedral was built during the goth period, and Mr. Zucman came up with a valid point. No they aren't really related but certainly there are similar aspects between the two. Both are dark and light at the same time, both are overly decorative. Also both love to show off their crosses.

We also ran through very quickly through the rest but mainly talked about the major names of each period like Turner, Michelangelo, De Vinci, Raphael, Monet, Manet, Picasso, Vermeer, and many more but only briefly.
