nam paik june

Well this guy gives another meaning to watching TV. he found a new way to use to TV to send messages and pictures. I bet his mom isn't mad that he watch a lot of TV because he a made a career out of it. ha ha. Anyways, this video is cool, for one its a video of TVs and two so much is going on in there, its almost as if the pictures being shown are what the TV is for. the bird flying, the skull ( for me that is like a symbol news for today since now the news is about how died or hows been kidnapped then killed, really sad but true) the cartoon, the people chatting, and other things. Its cool that that the big images are actually collages of video grouped together to make the picture. its very innovative of the artist to take all aspects of the art of TV and create a new art.

Gracie Kendal

shallow hal. The main character was able to see a woman's inner beauty and all what she's worth and finally when snaps out of the spell and finds that he really likes the girl. that is what it reminds me of. Gracie Kendal found peace in second life, she learned more about herself and is slowly getting use to her own skin. her avatar is really pretty ( reminds of my high school chem teacher) its her inner beauty, in second life its the only place she can show people who she is in from the inside when other people only see her from the outside and see that she doesn't follow Hollywood type. Kendal's art is all about inner beauty in my opinion and it shows especially in this picture. she still has her glasses, her smile, and her style. her other work on second life shows that beauty isn't just fitting in size two jeans. she is real pioneer and trying to prove that a little over weight doesn't mean the person isn't a good person.

Sterlarc

This video was fun because I'm very fascinated by muscles. The face that this artist created a thing to move them with a machine is cool. I love the two volunteers, and the face they are vastly different in size. totally says, in this demo, that size doesn't matter. I find it hilarious that Stelarc is trying to have the buff lift his shirt, that defiantly made my friends laugh when i showed them as it did for the audience. I like how the artist is all about the body. showing how it works different ways. again I've always been fascinated by the human body, if this guy ever comes to town ill go see him. the fact that he uses the human body for art and not like the insides of it like the body exhibit is cool. He's showing how the inside works from the outside.

Four Yip

four yip loves light colors and loves to do art about humans, animals, and nature. I find this fun since i just talked about Alice in wonderland. this is a fun twist on it since the march hare is a girl. the colors are very pretty and even makes me think of one of my dresses. four yip is cool since she wants people to interact with her art on second life. I guess that a good reason to be on SL. to get recognized and stuff but i personally can't spend hours on there. well back to the art. the floral background makes me think of 16th and 17th century art which makes this romantic then with the half girl/half rabbit's top being up open so much makes it very modern since now most art is half or naked women. the only problem I have with it is maybe the look of the girl, her face looks like she is maybe like13 or 14 and showing tons of skin for her age. I understand that a bikini does that too but like this is a lot of cleavage. I have mixed emotions about this but all in four yip does let the mind day dream in her art work.

Matthew Barney

OK i know this clips from his movie but i can't post a whole movie on here. Matthew barney has created his own universe of Alice in wonderland. These clips obviously show that he likes that story, the video has the white rabbits, the pink creature that creates havoc, random animal creatures instead of the talking flowers. He created a whole series like this too. Granted I haven't seen any of the movies but with presentation in class it shows that Barney does like the story of Alice if not i can find references to it but then again a lot things do. Another major key element to my Alice theory is that the video starts with a whole then goes to white rabbits. in the middle there is even a game similar to croquette. I may be wrong but it does seem like that also the colors are very psychedelic which I'm guessing is because of his birth in San Fran. Barney's work is interesting and out of this world and I can see why he like Bjork, they both out of this world or what is known as the main stream world.

Bill Viola

This video is pretty cool and yet i wonder how many people enjoy it now because of japan. what i mean by that is the couple is just standing there and taking the flow of water at them and the poor people in japan had to do it but not for art. the meaning of this has certianly changed and im sure that the artist Bill Viola didn't intend to stir up sad emotions for anyone. Still it is pretty to watch because it is slow motion and to see the actions of the body is really pretty to see.

Rober Rauschenberg

Wow this collage says everything major about the 1960s! you got the space race, Vietnam, JFK, Bobby Kennedy. Janice Joplin ( with a low top I may add), the protesters in the upper right hand corner, the death of Martin Luther King Jr., the civil riots that went on. I mean you could can show history class this and ask what do they see and what are the impacts of this collage. Its 100% American and tells so much just with the pictures. Robert Rauschenberg is a genius for creating this!!! I wonder if he knew what he was creating when he made this, well yeah I'm sure he knew but years later when all this stuff is huge in the history books, and pretty much every one in this is dead.( yeah I know sad but its true, The Kennedy brothers, Martin Luther King Jr., Janice are all gone) I mean seriously this collage sums up the 1960s pretty well with the exception of the British invasion but this collage clearly only shows the American side of the 1960s. but man I'm really impressed by this. His other work is great but this just stands out so much. Each picture tells a huge story, also each picture gives an emotion.

Erwin Redl

Erwin Redl's matrix 2. this art is cool, its cool that he gets this effect without fog machines like we do in theater. Its gotta take a long time to set up all the lights in the right way to get the effects. When I see this i think of the matrix but im sure every does, also the movies with the lasers trying to jump over them to get into the bank or to the teasure. I do have to say looking at the lights can play tricks on you and this already does with the all the triangles and soon stars. I wonder if one stands in different spots  the effect changes. I would to see this person, or anything by this artist, its amazing and the time and effort. I would also love to see him at work placing the lights or however he does it.

tony oursler

So this totally makes me think of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. I would have to say Tony Oursler's favorite ride was haunted mansion. In this video the dummy is just on the ground on his/her side with the face being live with emotion and not knowing what just happen. This gives new meaning to art coming to life, its the same technique that they used in the ride, but of course Oursler took it to new level. I like his way of art by taking it up a notch, and why not we have the technology, using "yesterday" art techniques and mixing it is wonderful and brakes boundaries that some might scared to do.

Mariko Mori

Well this video was fun and interesting  to watch. It reminded me dancers at Woodstock and other 1960s concerts that my father owns. The hand movements did most of the reminding, but it also made me think of the new Lady Gaga, with her prosthetics on her arms and forehead. Then the crystal ball reminds me Labyrinth. This video also is similar to anime with the music but then again that is Japanese. the video is also a bit of mediation, when i listen to the music i feel at peace, I'm not sure that was the intention of Ms. Mori though but the video is kinda cool, I wonder how much her costume weighs on her petite shoulders.

Spring break:Vegas

What a way to start off spring break. I went to Viva Las Vegas for a friends 21st brithday.
It was a blast, lots of safe drinking, dancing, fun in the sun, and wonderful food.

These are me and my gal pals at our hotel all dolled up for our first night on the town. yup thats monica of wecan.
So we went to the bank at the belligo for the first night and i was just taking random pictures. this is my groups favorite picture out of the trip because of the girls face in the back. Well the cute guy helps but its all about the girl and her face. We didn't see this photo until after we got back and just started busted up laughing.
The girl in the middle is the birthday girl. She begged and pleaded for me to go to vegas because I just kept saying i need to study and work on projects during spring break and she said nooo studying during your spring break you got to party, so  i did. it was blast.
Thats my trip to vegas. we didn't see any celebs this time, ( last time we saw a good portion of the cast of gLee, it was awesome since I love that show and indirectly partied with them) But all in all the time was fun. I didn't have any pictures of us at the pool since i was too scared of ruining my camera.

Second Life part two

Ok so here is this thing. I didn't like my time with it at all. I worked pretty much daily on it. I got frustrated with it many times. This is as close as i could get it i tried for 3 days. I couldn't figured out the hair to make it the way i always do it on myself along with the shoes. I thought dressing Barbie was hard when I was younger but then this was just annoying beyond belief. I don't have time to just sit and spend hours upon hours to make an avatar.

Toni Dove

Toni Dove is a virtual artist. in this picture she created what seems to be futuristic science lab. everything seems to also be projected onto glass, with the things like gears moving. Dove collaborated with Michael Mackenzie. they made this viewable through looking a camera so everything comes alive that way. In my opinion this just weird. I don't want to do look through something for a minute or two.  There will be a line of people trying to see the art work too. I don't like to be rushed when looking at art.

Edweard Muybridge

Edweard Muybridge took this photo(s) to prove that horses do get airborne. At one time during galloping they are off all four hooves. the point of his work was to show the movement in a human and animal that the human eye can't see. With this photo I find it really cool that the horse going at full speed is very focused and only moves his legs while going, unlike a dog whose head is usally moving around constantly granted I do understand that the horse is trained racing horse. With Muybridge idea of photographing movement made and still makes people ponder the movement in everything. There even has been a sport show based on his idea. Can't remember the name of it but it does certain plays and sees the what happens to the body and sometimes the damage to the human body.

WE CAN..part II

So the WECAN gallery was awesome. Way better than i expected. It was quite small but totally better. you could be more intimate with the work and not feel over whelmed by how much there is to see in such little time. The outcome of people was amazing, people ranging 5-68 year there. The members of WECAN were very nice and I'm not just saying that because I know some of them but just the way they interacted with other guests. The WECAN members answered all the questions and greeted every one that came in and visited and explain what they are.
It was also really cool to see that the gallery was part of the Long Beach Art Walk. Many galleries are put on the streets of 3rd, 4th and i believe 5th street. The members were excited about being part of the Long Beach Art Walk. It was like seeing a kid on Christmas morning, they were jumping around and talking about how much more people they can add to their list for emails, facebook, and mailings.
Here all the pictures I took and then some that I borrowed:

sorry this one came out blurry. ^
This painting was sooooo cool because the colors are so dark but with the flash of my camera so much more color showed up. without the flash there is no purple to see and the decreasing of the black to coral isn't as detailed without the flash.

These were my favorite for so many reasons. 1. I love pizza, 2. I love music 3. they popped more than the other paintings. 4. THEY'RE ON CASSETTES!!! Talk about recycling!

I also liked this one for the transparent and what one thinks when he or she see its. When I saw it i thought about how California use to be property of Mexico and filled with cowboys and now that we moving far far from that romanticism of the old west its slowly disappearing.

The painting with the bug and the one above are from the same artist! These had similarities with style and color. The red popped a lot in these. The artist was there too, really cool guy, laid back and easy to talk to.

The owl. I found this one to be amazing because its like a conscience, like Jimny Cricket. He's there to make one double think their discions.
I found this one to go well with the owl one which is below. This is the reaction to not paying attention to the deeper meaning of the owl painting.
When I see this one i think of the person hanging out their work tools for the day, wishing for the day to finally put it for the last time. Its the person's favorite work brush and it got the person through think and thin.

My friend and her cousin the back round. We like to take pictures a lot so i told her to do her model face. :)

This is the outside of the venue and here are people going in and out of it.

Second Life part one.

Not liking Second life so much. Its taking me days to set up the little person like me. im pretty computer savy but this is just getting on my nerves. I've downloaded like 3 viewers, talked to support tech people and still got no where til now. I stayed up late too which didn't help my energy for work but i have ways around that so i hope that i finally downloaded the right software to do this....Right now with the generic avatar i look like a blonde tomb raider, just saying.

When I inteviewed my friend Monica, she pretty much gave me the same answer above, so I thought i'd use their description. after all they all co-wrote the description so why would it not be the same.

Also another website of their's is facebook of course. Please add them as a friend. I can garndtee you'll learn something everyday from them. They'll post artist birthdays (artists being rappers, singers, bands, actors, painters, scupltors, and much more) its amazing,I truely do learn something everyday from them.  My favorite thing about their facebook page that they'll do an ARTIST OF THE DAY.  It can be wide range from anyone, I learn more about artists this way because some the people mentioned aren't in art history books, galleries, pieces at the norton simon, the gettys', the huntington library. They give so much info to enrich one's life and even day. Today's artist is Jean-HonorĂ© Fragonard.

In my own opinion the best thing about WECAN is that they will show pretty much anyone's art. Age doesn't matter to them.

Here is the group putting their last exhibit together as a group. It takes them roughly about a month a half to set up.

Slangair Residency! 02.07.11 - 03.26.11

See there's the candy I was talking about!! ^^

If you wish to submit art work you can find this form underneath at their website. www.wecan-la.com please go for it. Everyone's got to start somewhere.
